The most visually exciting of all the sections is the Manwork

The manwork section is only done by dogs working the PD (Patrol Dog) stake. The dogs entered in this stake are still required to do the Nosework, Control and  Agility sections and then they tackle the manwork which is  split into the following exercises (not always in this order)

Quartering  45 marks   The dog is required to search for a hidden 'criminal' in the areas designated by the judge. Upon finding the person the dog should bark until the handler is told by the judge to join the dog. Before joining the dog the handler is usually told to deal with the situation so it is not uncommon for the handler to get the 'criminal' out of the 'hide' to Search and possibly Escort him somewhere too as detailed in the next exercise below.

Search And Escort  25 marks  The handler may position the 'criminal' and, with the dog guarding them, search for weapons. The weapons ( if any ! ) may be very well concealed and could also be left in the 'hide' or on the floor in the nearby area. Judges should be looking for a thorough search and a good attitude from the dog. The 'criminal(s)' may then be Escorted.  In this section also comes an Attack On Handler where a 'criminal' tries to attack the handler and it is up to the dog to stop him. This is generally done at some point in the Search And Escort but could be done at any point in the test ( even in the Nosework section ! ).

Test Of Courage  20 marks         The dogs courage is tested by the 'criminals' attacking the dog. Although this sounds fierce, in 15 years of watching these tests I have yet to see a dog injured, in fact it is extremely rare that the dogs are even touched! The nature of this test is entirely up to the judge but I have seen bin lids, water, rubbish bags, tin cans on a string, pots and pans, leafy branches, air horns, car horns, water pistols, rattles, gunfire, sticks, plastic bottles with stones in, bed sheets, pipe lagging, scary masks, gorilla suits, people shouting, people making silly noises, unexpected attacks, shotgun fire, spooky settings to name but a few. Even if the dogs are put of they are rarely 'run off' the field but occasionally this does happen.

Chase And Detention   30 marks   The dog is sent on the judges signal to stop a 'criminal(s)'. For maximum marks the dog should bite first time and hold on until told to leave by the handler. If the dog lets go too early the 'criminal(s)' will continue to try to escape, the 'criminal(s)' will try to make a 'run out' point if the dog doesn't make a good enough attempt to stop them. If this is the case the dog may not be given a chance to do the Recall.

Recall   30 marks   The recall should be set up the same as the Chase exercise but this time the dog will be called back to the handler at approx halfway. For maximum marks the dog should return to the handler on one command.

In all of the above exercises any lack of control e.g. dog breaking to bite early, not releasing when told, biting when they shouldn't, etc  will be penalised.

The exercises can come in any order and there can be a 'lockout' which means you can't watch any of the tests until you have worked so you may have absolutely no idea what will happen until you get out there!
